Picture this: It's a cold and snowy evening at Snowshoe. Everyone just got in from a long day on the slopes and they're tired and a little crabby. But you thought ahead: you put a delicious stew in the crockpot this morning, and it's ready to eat. Now all you need is a little distraction. A movie! But which one? Fear not: we've got a list of 10 of our favorite snow/winter/cold (but NOT Christmas) movies to set the mood and help you unwind for the evening.
These are in no particular order and you should definitely read some online reviews for content to determine what's best for your fam.
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
Family movie with fabulous snow scenes, an easy to hate bad guy, amazing redemption, and a little brother that's a total pain sometimes.
The Secret of the Wings
Yes, it’s an animated Disney Fairies movie, but it’s really fun!
Ice Age
The way the characters talk to each other isn’t my favorite, but there’s good lessons. And kids think it’s pretty funny.
Abominable
I just adore this movie about a struggling kid and a monster who saves everyone when they are trying to save him.
Cool Runnings
If you need me to summarize this for you, it’s because you haven’t seen it, which means it should be your first watch. Jamaican bobsled team goes to the Olympics in Canada.
Miracle
While we’re on the topic of Olympics, this is the story of the 1980 Olympic hockey team, going against the big baddies: the Russians.
Frozen (and Frozen 2)
I know, I know. Just hear me out. Has it been a while since you’ve seen either of these? Give them a try, the story is actually pretty solid.
Snowday
This is a terrible movie. But what kid doesn’t want to experience doing everything they can to keep their school closed? Also, this is for the 2000 version- the 2022 remake is even worse. Like, don't tell anyone I told you to watch that movie.
Togo
Based on true events: can you even believe that this stuff happens?! Forget Balto, this is the real story of a heroic and hard working snow dog.
Eight Below
And finally, Paul Walker can join your movie night in this English remake of the original Japanese film: friends attempt a treacherous journey across the Antartic.
What did we leave out? What movie should never be watched again? Hope you can get cozy with your fave crew and enjoy some movies at Snowshoe this winter!
