How to Book the Best Vacation Home for your Snowshoe Adventure: Winter Edition

  • Posted on

Yes, it may be July, but you’re already thinking about the sound of your board in powder, and it’s time to book that vacation to Snowshoe! But once you see all your options, it’s kind of overwhelming. Fear not: we’re here to walk you through all the decisions and help you book the best possible property for your Snowshoe winter getaway. Let’s jump in!

TLDR:

Figure out these three items, in this order, to find the best place for your trip!

  • Most Important Item
  • Group Logistics
  • Vital Amenities
If you want —>
  • Perfect house —> book asap
  • Low price —> book last minute (and directly with host to save on Airbnb/VRBO fees!)
  • Amazing weather —> be super flexible and fly by the seat of your pants

First, determine what is MOST important to you.

  • Is it crucial you have the perfect house? (PS- that doesn't exist, but there are a lot of really great ones! But, set appropriate expectations, mmmk?)
  • Does the weather need to be amazing? (Weather on the mountain can change at the drop of a tuque, so don’t set expectations too high here either.)
  • Is budget the driving factor? (You can totally set a per person/day limit and stick to it!)
  • Do the dates need to align perfectly? (If so, book asap!)

Having your priorities set will allow you to see which place and when to book will work best for your goals.

After you’ve got your most important item, determine all logistics: dates, group size, unit size, etc

If you’re planning on coming on a holiday week/end, book immediately. Yes, you will pay a premium, and yes, it will be busy, but if this is your only option, book now to make sure you get the best place for your group. If your dates are flexible, this can snag you the best deal and leave the most options open to you. You can even wait longer and book last minute if you’re not too picky (what’s left often won’t be great- but it will probably be cheaper!)

The earlier in the season you book, the less chance there is for natural snow. Except last year. Or the year before. But sometimes…. Nevermind, you never know what mother nature is up to. If amazing weather is the most important part of your trip, you can wait until last minute to book.

Do you want everyone staying in one house? Or maybe you want three small condos next to each other? There are tons of options on the mountain, just figure out which works best, and then seek that out.

Protip: There are not many 4+ bedroom places on the mountain, so if having everyone stay together is a priority, book early!

Time for amenities!

Here are some of the top amenities you can look for on the mountain:

  • Ski in/out
  • Hot tub
  • Gear storage or garage
  • Private parking
  • In unit washer/dryer
  • Boot dryers
  • Full kitchen
  • Fast WiFi

If you have non-negotiable ones, filter by those, or ask a host if they offer them.

Parking can be tough to find, especially on holidays, so if you have multiple cars, ensure there are options for what you need.

While there are many food options, sometimes you may want to eat in. Not all places have full kitchens, so if you want to cook sometimes, make sure you have a kitchen.

With the lack of cell service on the mountain, fast wifi is crucial. Make sure your place has it.

In unit washer/dryer are not standard in larger buildings in the Village, but most homes do offer at least one set. Confirm, especially if you’ll be on the snow.

How much gear storage do you need? Some buildings offer paid storage options, while some larger homes even have full garages for all your storage needs.

Lastly, take a look at reviews. And, take each one with a grain of salt. If the trend says “this is an awesome place,” that’s a pretty safe bet. But if you are constantly reading, “house was okay, but couldn’t get ahold of the host for several hours” you might want to pay attention to that.
